{"id":10478,"date":"2018-03-10T18:12:26","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T14:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theanalyticon.com\/?p=10478"},"modified":"2018-04-10T18:16:34","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T14:16:34","slug":"methodological-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theanalyticon.com\/en\/%d0%bd%d0%be%d0%b2%d0%be%d1%81%d1%82%d0%b8-en\/methodological-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"METHODOLOGICAL GUIDE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which media outlets did we monitor?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We observed 5 popular online media outlets, namely 1in.am, News.am, Aravot.am, 168.am, Tert.am.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, we monitored 23 TV programmes of various genres, namely news programs (\u201cAgenda\u201d, \u201c360\u00b0\u201d, \u201cNews Hour\u201d, \u201cPost Factum\u201d, \u201cEpicenter\u201d, \u201cSunday Epicenter\u201d, \u201cThe Country Today\u201d, \u201cSaturday Evening\u201d, \u201cHorizon\u201d, \u201cSunday Horizon\u201d), interviews (\u201cOff the Agenda\u201d, \u201cAgenda: Interview\u201d, \u201cR-Evolution\u201d, \u201cOutline\u201d, \u201cCountry\u2019s Issue\u201d, and \u201cPerspective\u201d), talk-shows\/ TV oratory pieces (\u201cFirst Pavillion\u201d, \u201cFormula Club\u201d, \u201cArmenian Firday\u201d, \u201cTransition with Dulyan\u201d and \u201cOut Loud\u201d), and TV documentary (\u201cLife on the Border\u201d and \u201cAt the Posts\u201d) by 5 TV companies of republican and satellite coverage (Public TV, Armenia TV, Kentron TV, Yerkir Media TV, and Shant TV). We monitored the Nation \u2013 Army series satellite broadcast by Public TV (Channel One).<!--more--><strong>What topic and what issues did we research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We studied the Armenian army as a whole. We aimed at describing not only the specific features of coverage on the public discussions regarding the Nation \u2013 Army concept launched in that time period (mostly in October \u2013 November), but also the broader information climate throughout the three-month period of our research (October 2017 \u2013 January 2018) that had emerged due to the provision of information on other issues directly related with the army.<\/p>\n<p>This classification was arrived at due to a content analysis of the materials with a targeted focus on the issues raised in them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>______________<br \/>\nThe group of issues on Nation-Army (a total of 15 issues) were raised in the discussions on and coverage of the concept, as well as in the context of active political and civil processes developing on the occasion. These are Military service\/conscription, education\/deferral, security, armaments, social issues, domestic affairs, evasion from the army, corruption, public attitude to the army, healthcare, economy\/supplies to the army, transparency of the army and civilian oversight of the army, migration, democratic freedoms, and the link between church and the army.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The group of non &#8211; \u2018Nation-Army\u2019, rather so-called background issues (a total of 10 issues) were covered beyond the context of Nation-Army concept. They were defined according to the following characteristic features:<br \/>\n_________________<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Legal \u2013 <\/strong>Information on criminal cases on offenses in the Armenian army,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foreign relations <\/strong>\u2013 Information on foreign military relations and military cooperation with other<\/li>\n<li><strong>Karabakh conflict \u2013 <\/strong>Information on the military situation on the contact line of forces in Karabakh and in the border regions of Armenia, on incidents, announcements and judgments on the reduction of military tensions in the contact<\/li>\n<li><strong>Azerbaijani army <\/strong>\u2013 information on the armaments of the opponent army, foreign military cooperation, events taking place within the<\/li>\n<li><strong>Armies of other countries <\/strong>\u2013 Information on the RF military base in Armenia and the armies of CSTO<\/li>\n<li><strong>Event-related News <\/strong>\u2013 Information on the visits of the leadership from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, the General Headquarters, the Defense Army of the Artsakh Republic to military units, as well as inter-ministerial and other types of meetings and discussions, and information on the military exercises of the Armenian Army.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feature <\/strong>\u2013 Stories about soldiers and officers currently in service at the armed forces, as well as military servicemen killed in the Karabakh war and subsequent<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coverage <\/strong>\u2013 Issues in army events coverage, including training issues for journalists covering military exercises and other<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diaspora <\/strong>&#8211; Judgments about the relations between the Diaspora and the Armenian army that were voiced without reference to the Nation-Army<\/li>\n<li><strong>History <\/strong>\u2013 Information about Armenian military art and the participation of the Armenian military in World<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>How did we count? What did we define?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We measured the frequency of coverage of this or that topic after the following formula: \u201cone material\/story \u2013 one or more issues\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>We have defined the representatives of the political, social, professional and other groups speaking on the topic under study as authors of the issue. We have measured the level of their activity by the principle of \u201cone author \u2013 one or several issues\u201d. The number of issues raised in one material\/story has been counted by the change of author and change of the sign (positive, negative or neutral) of attitude contained in the messages by the following principle: \u201cThe number of authors is equal to the number of issues, and the number of signs is equal to the number of issues\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>We have determined the attitudinal signs of the issues coming from the direct semantics of the messages, not their contextual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>RESULTS OF ARMENIAN ONLINE MEDIA AND TV MONITORING<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>(October 10, 2017 &#8211; January 10, 2018) Summary<\/strong><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Which media outlets did we monitor?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We observed 5 popular online media outlets, namely 1in.am, News.am, Aravot.am, 168.am, Tert.am.
